It's easy to use a Newport Bus with our PASSPORT and PASSPORT Plus smartcards. You can purchase online, or top-up on our buses, and at our Travel Centre in Friars Walk.
When you get on any of our buses, present your smartcard to the driver, and pay to top-up a week’s travel credit
on it. Valid on Newport Bus in Zone 1 and 2 only.
How does it work?
Topping up your smartcard on the bus, or at our Travel Centre is easy. Simply place your PASSPORT or PASSPORT Plus
card on the ticket machine next to the driver, along with the value of the top-up credit, and the driver will
top-up the card with a week’s travel credit giving you unlimited travel for seven days. If you already have
existing credit on the smartcard, then your new credit will run when that expires, meaning you can pay to top-up
your card in advance. For monthly top-up, please visit the travel centre.
How do I get a card and how much do they cost?
The PASSPORT and PASSPORT Plus smartcards are available to BUY ONLINE, or from our Travel Centre at Newport Indoor Market. They’re free with no administration charges – you just pay for the amount of travel credit you want to put on it (a full week, month or year). You’re then good to go, and just top it up when you need to. If you just want to put a week's credit on your smartcard, you can do this on any of our buses, but multiple weeks and monthly(4-weekly) top-ups need to be done at the Travel Centre. If you are topping up on the bus, just remember to have the exact money ready.
How do I know which card I need?
If you just want to travel in Newport and not outside of the city boundary, then the PASSPORT card will give
you unlimited access to these services. This is what we call the ZONE 1 area. If you want
to use a Newport Bus service outside of the city boundary as well, meaning ZONE 2 that includes
Cardiff (route 30) and Cwmbran (route 29B), you’ll need the PASSPORT Plus card. This gives you unlimited travel
in both Zones 1 & 2. Our services into Monmouthshire are in ZONE 3 and have their specific
fare structure with weekly tickets (Monweek and Network Rider)
which can be purchased on-bus. Information on ZONE 3 pricing can be found within the relevant timetables (73/74/Z74
- 74A/C - 60 - C1/C2/C3).
Please view our visual Zone Map page for more information.
What if I have a Passport smartcard and want to upgrade to a Passport Plus?
If you already have a PASSPORT smartcard and want to keep travelling in ZONE 1, then you don’t need to do anything, as your existing card will allow you to travel in this part of our network. If you want to travel out of the central city (ZONE 1) to Cardiff and Cwmbran (ZONE 2), then you’ll need to upgrade to the PASSPORT Plus smartcard at our Travel Centre. This is free and easy to do and any existing credit on your Passport smartcard will be transferred to your new Passport Plus smartcard.
