Fares are changing
From February 4, Newport Bus is increasing its fares by an average of 4.25%. The fare increase will only affect the tickets in Zone 1 (Newport) and Zone 2 (Cardiff and Cwmbran). Despite this increase, our fares remain one of the cheapest methods of transport in South Wales.
The new fare increase means that the single journey within Newport will now cost £2.30 and the adult all-day ticket will cost £4.60. However, regular users can still enjoy the best value fare with weekly and 4-weekly tickets. These tickets (Passport, Passport Plus and Bamboo) provide up to 54% savings from regular adult fares and can be purchased in advance on the Newport Bus app or the Newport Bus smartcard.
For more savings, annual tickets are also available for youth, aged 16 to 21 with a MyTravelPass card and children aged 5 to 15. These tickets still offer greater savings even when purchasing weekly and 4-weekly tickets for term-time only. Commuters can access the savings of an annual ticket via their employer, where the cost can be spread monthly via their wages.
With the new mix of home and office working for many commuters, Newport Bus will also launch a new app-only fare package called Trio and Trio Plus. This bundle of three City Day tickets offers up to 13% savings and it is priced at £12 for Trio (three City Day tickets) and £15 for Trio Plus (three City Day Plus)
David Jenkins, Newport Transport’s Finance Director and interim Managing Director explains: “Following a fare adjustment in April 2023, we find it necessary to make a further slight increase to our main tickets. It's important to note that no adjustments were made for three years before April 2023. These changes are also essential due to the uncertainty in Welsh Bus Funding and the need to sustain our services. We appreciate your understanding and continued support.”
