Ffoto Newport is an independent photo gallery & shop. Our mission is to showcase local and international photographers in South Wales.
The space showcases various photographers from all walks of life throughout the year. Some are already established while others will be just at the start of their journey. Whoever they are and whatever they have to say, we see it as our job to give them a platform.
Ffoto Newport is keen to accept submissions from anyone who has or wants a connection to this beautiful land. We’re a small gallery with some ambition and some good intent. We’re here to put a spotlight on Newport and make a positive impact – however small.
We officially opened our doors on November 26 of 2021 within the city’s historic and recently rejuvenated Market Arcade, and have now moved to the oldest city arcades at No 1 Newport Arcade - just opposite the entrance of the market.
Reviving photography in Newport
We aim to bring back photography home to Newport where it all started in the 70s with David Hurn setting up the documentary course. Now is the best time to reconnect with all the photographers who were educated here over the years and created some amazing projects, some of which are recognised worldwide.
We hope to bring as many of them back to Newport to showcase some of their work in a place where their journey started, whether it be in the Newport College of Arts or the Caerleon campus.
Newport should be proud that many photographers chose to study here, and the people of Newport have always welcomed them into their communities whether it be in homes or businesses. “We need to be reminded of what’s valuable and that’s the city’s history within the education of photography."
More than showcasing
As well as an exhibition space, we’re offering a range of complimentary services: film developing, editing services, printing, buying and selling second-hand photographic equipment – doing our bit to reuse and recycle as responsible businesses should.
We also sell vintage cameras & have a photography book section - a great opportunity to acquire rare and out-of-print photobooks at bargain prices. Work from a wide range of American, European and British Photographers is available.
We run workshop sessions for anyone wanting to learn photography or know more about how to progress further in the industry. We're here to help and are open to suggestions.
