Good Luck to the Welsh Ambulance Service Rugby Team

Newport Bus is delighted to be showing its support to the new Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST) Rugby Union Team by providing transport to their first international match in Richmond, London, on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.
The team will play the well-established London Ambulance Service (LAS) team in a charitable match. The funds raised will support the work of the PALS Battalion, a Community Interest Company (CIC) that works to provide support for the health and wellbeing of the veterans and civilian population in the UK and further afield. The event, due to be attended by Jason Killens, Chief Executive Officer WAST and Daniel Elkeles, Chief Executive Officer LAS, will also welcome Chris Moon as a guest speaker. Chris is renowned for his work with a charity clearing landmines in Cambodia.
This momentous event might also be the catalyst for a UK-wide All Ambulance Service Rugby Union league starting next season.
Founded in February 2020, the WAST Rugby Union team is a relatively new venture that brings together all Welsh Ambulance personnel from across Wales. Operational Team Leader for the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust in Newport, Tony Lane, took on the voluntary role to get a team together and coordinate its management – from funding for the kit by the Welsh Ambulance Charitable Funds to the accreditation from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).
Tony comments: "The idea of the rugby team was put forward early in 2020 to promote health and wellbeing within the Welsh Ambulance Service. Despite the setback due to the pandemic, the uptake has been fantastic. Currently, we have a squad of about 40 people, all passionate and avid club rugby players. Since January 2022, and thanks to the WRU accreditation, we have managed a few successes on the pitch, playing games across West Wales and South Wales, including against the Fire Service and the Gwent Police teams.
We believe that there is a bright future for the team, and we thank Newport Transport for the support they are giving us. We hope that our success will soon generate interest from sponsors enabling us to move the team forward. "
Morgan Stevens, Director of Delivery for Newport Transport, says:" It's a pleasure to be able to support the Welsh Ambulance Service team with transport. As a company, we are always keen to support community-led activities when we can. We also understand the difficulties of a job on the frontline, especially after the last two years. Everyone at Newport Bus wishes the team the best of luck for their match next week. "
