We are delighted to announce the launch of a mobile ticketing and real-time bus tracking app bringing further modernisation to its transport network. The Newport Bus app is available for free and can be downloaded to mobile devices from the App Store and the Google Play Store from Monday, September 28.

Newport Bus mobile app was developed in partnership with UrbanThings using the modern and efficient TicketlessTM platform, already trusted by many bus operators worldwide. This smart ticketing solution provides real-time information (RTI) and mobile ticketing which are integrated with the Newport Bus Ticketer ticket machines. Using a combination of real time data and data-based predictions, the mobile app will also inform passengers of bus occupancy levels and predicted occupancy at bus stops, thus enabling users to plan their journey with social distancing in mind.

The mobile app will bring multiple benefits to bus users. The main features of the Newport Bus app are:

  • Prior purchase of day tickets, weekly and 4-weekly passports for travel within the Newport Bus network.
  • Real-time bus time information and location of the approaching bus. The map also shows the traffic level in the city.stops.

Mobile tickets and passports can also be purchased and gifted to another Newport Bus app user, as well as receiving notifications when the ticket is used, making it ideal for parents to

  • View of the occupancy levels of the approaching buses and the predicted level at individual purchase tickets for their children.

RIDE CONTACTLESS WITH NEWPORT BUS

We're delighted to annouced that from Sunday 1st March, passengers on Newport Bus will be able to pay using their contactless-enabled bank card for all fares and weekly top-up on their Passport and Bamboo smartcards. The new ticketing machines will also allow passengers to make smartphone payment such as Apple Pay or Google Pay when set up on their mobile device.

Following investment in a new ticketing system, we are now in position to offer contactless payment onboard our entire fleet of local buses.

Contactless payment will simplify the way people pay for their fares and will be especially beneficial in encouraging the occasional bus users to make a switch to bus travel. As the City of Newport is continually attracting more visitors, thanks to the opening of the ICC Wales and other acclaimed events across the City, we expect this will contribute to promoting greener journeys.

This faster method of payment - you only need to ask your driver for the ticket you want and pop bank card onto the reader for your ticket to be printed – will speed up boarding time and make bus travel a better, and easier experience for all. Here how:

The contactless system chosen by Newport Transport is the Ticketer ETM system, which is the industry’s most innovative ticketing solution, and is designed to give passengers the widest possible range of payment options. These new machines fitted with improved GPS-locator will also improve Newport Bus’s ability to provide real-time information. In time, this invaluable data will help deliver a more efficient and reliable bus services for our customers.

Round Prices for 2020 ...Fare Enough

From January 5, 2020, we are introducing a simplified fare structure ahead of a string of projects for 2020, starting with the installation of a new ticketing system early in 2020.

This is the first review since February 2018! Simpler prices and a reduced number of options will go towards reducing the time spent looking for coins. However, this is changing for the better as, by the end of January, we plan to have a new ticket machine system in operation.

In the first phase, the new ticket machines will enable payment for bus tickets with all contactless card types as well as Apple Pay and Android Pay. A welcome change for the occasional user or the regular commuter, it will allow quicker boarding time. Phase two will see mobile ticketing being offered to our customers, closely followed by phase three that will see bus real-time information on mobile devices.

The new ticketing machines will enable real-time travel information. Morgan Stevens, Operations Director for Newport Bus explains what it means for Newport Bus:” We are really looking forward to the implementation of this new system. The new ticket machines will enable us to have invaluable passenger insight, which will give us the improved understanding to deliver efficient bus services to all.”

The fare review will only affect the adult, child and youth tickets and the Passport fares for travelling in zone 1 and zone 2. The fares for travelling in Zone 3, which extends the Newport Bus network to Chepstow and Monmouth remain unchanged. To simplify the number of different price options, the discount for Freedom card users will be scrapped together with the Student Passport card, which is replaced by the Youth Passport for under 21 and the adult Passport. As public transport is now dominating the environmental debate, we’re introducing an important change to benefit commuters: our highly discounted annual Passport cards that offer a daily commute at £2.70* for a Passport Plus holder will now be available exclusively via employers, giving staff the added benefit of paying monthly through their salary. Don’t forget to speak to your employer about our Employer Bus Passport scheme.

We’re very excited about the upcoming developments for Newport Transport in 2020. Dear all,

I would like to sincerely thank all our customers for their loyalty and support this year, 2019 was very challenging, however, 2020 is looking to be very exciting with so many new projects, ready to be delivered. I would like to end this year with a glimpse of what's to come.

In early 2020, we will have the installation of a new ticket machine system, which will allow contactless card payments. We will see the arrival of fourteen brand new zero-emission fully electric buses. The new electric vehicles will contribute immensely towards the improvement of the air quality in the City of Newport. They will represent almost 20% of your fleet of buses in the city!

As if this wasn't enough, in early Spring we will be launching a mobile-ticketing app with mobile ticketing functionality and real-time bus information on your mobile. This clear and simple platform will bring Newport Bus into the 21st century and will go a long way towards encouraging drivers to leave the car at home for the benefit of all. Fewer cars = less congestion = cleaner air = quicker bus journey time = a better environment for everyone.

Following comments on our social media pages, please find below answers to the most common questions received on our fully-electric buses. Please do not hesitate to comment below. We will endeavour to respond to any relevant comments.

  1. Electronic and buses – what about if the bus runs out of power?
  2. The electric bus will not be running out of power. In operations, the bus will return to the depot when the charge reaches approximately 20%. This first addition to our fleet is an ex-demonstrator bus. However, the next fourteen buses will have a higher power charge, which will increase the range of operation.

  1. Electric buses are not really zero emission vehicles as electricity is required to charge the batteries. What is the infrastructure in place at the depot?
  2. Newport Transport has partnered with Zenobe Energy, an independent owner and operator of energy storage. Working with Zenobe ensure that the energy required to charge the buses will be from renewable sources. Newport Transport already utilises 214 solar panels and this is in the process of being expanded. We are working with our partners to ensure that the operations of our electric buses will be as close to zero emission as possible.

  1. It has been reported in the press about children as young as five years old working in mines to get the elements to make the electric batteries.
  2. The elements mined to produce the batteries supplied by Yutong are iron, phosphate and lithium. The reference to child labour is in relation to the mining of cobalt, which is not used in these batteries.
    By working with reputable partners, we ensure that due diligence was given to the accreditation of suppliers.

  1. Will the bus be able to operate a whole day on one charge?
  2. The current bus is expected to cover 187 km (116 miles) on a single charge, making it suitable for most routes around the City of Newport. The next new fourteen buses will benefit from larger batteries increasing the range to 380 km.

  1. What route will the electric bus be operating on?
  2. The current bus is used on most of the routes that currently operate a full-size single-deck vehicle. The mid-term objective is to lower the air pollution in the areas of the city which suffer the most with poor air quality. Therefore, seven of the fourteen buses will be dedicated to the Caerleon Road corridor, which has two areas of poor air quality. The other seven buses will be allocated closer to the time of operation.

  1. The electric bus appears to be a small bus with steps inside, making it dangerous for the elderly and disabled and with very limited seating.
  2. All buses are low floor and compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). The Yutong E12 electric buses ordered by Newport Transport are similar to our current single-deck fleet and have a seating capacity of 39 seats.
    We are reviewing the option of a smaller bus to operate on the routes that can only cope with smaller size vehicles.

  1. Will this first electric bus be permanent in the streets of Newport?
  2. The introduction of electric buses in the Newport Transport fleet is part of our bus replacement strategy. Thanks to the partnership in place with Pelican Engineering and Zenobe Energy, the cost of an E12 is comparable to a diesel bus. In addition, there are substantial financial savings due to lower maintenance requirements, believed to be in the region of 33% compared to a diesel bus.
    At present, the limitation to extend the introduction of the electric buses is the range. Newport Transport required a third of its vehicle to exceed the current range of 340 km of the new vehicles. This will improve overtime as battery technology improves.

  1. Why did you choose the Yutong E12?
  2. We have trialled various models of electric buses over the last 12 to 18 months in order to choose the one that will be best suited to our network. The feedback received on the Yutong demonstrator was very positive. Research into driver and passenger acceptance showed a 94% rating from passengers and 96% from drivers, in contrast with scores in the region of 70-80% on the previous vehicles tested.
    In addition, the manufacturer Yutong is one of the largest electric bus manufacturers in the world, with the experience of thousands of buses with the same battery and drive train in service.

Back to school – How to enjoy your bus journey to school?

Here are 5 things you need to know when catching the school services to secondary school:

1.  Be on time at your stop and have your bus pass ready! We hope that you like the 2019/2020 orange chosen for this year. Show your pass clearly to the driver for a free ride to school. No bus pass, no free ride – even when you are wearing your school uniform. In that case, to get on the bus, you will be asked to purchase a ticket. An under-16 Bamboo single ticket costs £1.10 in Zone 1; that’s for the whole city up to Caerleon to the east and Marshfield to the west. You can also use a Youth Passport card if you’re aged between 16 and 21.

If you lose your scholar’s pass, a replacement can be provided at the cost of £10.00 – Please contact us via the travel centre or the website contact form.

2. We operate most of the school services using the current local bus services. Some of these bus services operate to/from the school grounds and will display the destination as a school route. These services, that are also open to the general public, are:
- St Joseph’s RC High School – SJ1 to SJ14
- Bassaleg School - B1 and B2
- The John Frost School – JF1 to JF4
- Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed – YG1

The other two secondary schools in Newport are served by the regular bus services – 74/74C for Llanwern High School and 15/16 for Newport High School.

Please respect the other passengers as all they want is to arrive at work on time.

3. Have fun on your journey to school, but respect your driver. Your safety is paramount. Our drivers are trained to drive you safely to school and back, however, they must not be distracted while driving. It is, therefore, your job to stand well clear of the doors and not to talk to the driver while en route. If they do not answer, they’re not being rude, they're doing their job. Here's a tip: Be nice to your drivers and they’ll be nice to you back.

4. Lost properties - Every item left on the bus at the end of its shift is returned to the depot. We have a large number of lost properties which are never claimed, so if you’ve forgotten something on the bus, get in touch and we will have a look for you. The popular items are PE kits, musical instruments, art folders, mobile phones and umbrellas of course.

5. If the bus is late due to traffic, don’t worry we will let the school know on your behalf.

If you didn’t qualify for a free of charge scholar pass to use the school services, we recommend that you purchase a Bamboo card – the under-16 bus card or a Youth Passport card – the 16-21 bus card. Both smartcards can be purchased with proof of age (birth certificate, passport or other official ID) at the travel shop or online in our smartcard store.

New routes and service changes for September 2019

As part of our route improvement plan, we're delighted to announce the introduction of two new routes and amendments to its regular services to start in September 2019.

From the 2nd of September and in time for the opening of the International Convention Centre (ICC Wales) based in the grounds of the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport Bus will be running a new bus route – Route 9. This new route will depart from the bus station (stand 6) to the Coldra Court Hotel and Langstone Business Park, serving the train station, Chepstow Road and the Celtic Manor Resort. ICC Wales is expected to attract an increased number of visitors to Newport and the area. Therefore, it is important that as the main bus operator within the community, we support this fantastic facility by providing public transport for staff and visitors.

The introduction of the route 9 will also benefit the residents of Chepstow Road and more importantly the residents of Treberth estate (Bishpool), with increased services during the day of one every hour instead of every two hours.

The introduction of te new route brings changes to route 73, as it will no longer operate via Treberth Estate which will be serviced by the 9, and will operate directly to the City Centre via Chepstow Road.

Route X74 Newport – Chepstow Service will now serve Glan Llyn estate earlier and later than previously, Monday to Friday, with the first service linking the estate to the city centre departing at 07:30 instead of 11:29 and the last service departing the city centre at 17:25 instead of 14:15. The 74A/74C service remains unchanged.

Routes 42 and 43 – bus station to Spytty Retail Park via Moorland Park or Nash College will both benefit from an increased frequency to every 30 minutes from 8:00 till 18:00 weekdays, giving passengers a combined service every 15 minutes to the retail park or the city centre. Saturdays and Sundays remain unchanged.

We have also brought changes to the routes on the west of Newport. Route 34, currently operating one in the morning and one in the afternoon will be no longer be running from the 2nd of September. Route 35 and 36 remain unchanged, serving Duffryn Way, Tredegar House Drive, Pencarn Way to Celtic Springs. We will be running a prize draw on the 35 and 36 routes and further information will be provided shortly on our social media platforms and bus stops.

Newport Bus has been awarded a contract to operate bus services to both Brynglas and Allt-Yr-Yn. The new services will commence from Monday 10th September and will be numbered 11A/11C. The route 11 will be covering both areas in two opposite loops departing from the bus station (stand 13). Connection on Malpas Road will be available for passengers wishing to split their journey to go to the city centre. An early morning and late afternoon service will be in place to coincide with standard office hours for the people working in the Civic Centre district.

These changes reflect our commitment to help bringing a viable and effective alternative to sustainable transport to the City of Newport.”

Working in partnership with the Westfield Heath British Transplant Games 2019

BRITISH TRANSPLANT GAMES 2019

We are delighted to be appointed the Official Games Transport provider for the Westfield Health British Transplant Games that will be held in Newport from July 25 to 28, 2019. This is another great event for the city, giving Newport the opportunity to show off its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Now in its 42nd year, the four-day multi-sport event organised for Transplant Sport will attract around 2,500 transplant recipients, live donors, donor families and supporters to venues across the city to take part in and watch 23 sports including track and field, swimming, cycling, badminton, walking and table tennis.

Newport Transport will be organising high capacity vehicles to shuttle the athletes and their family to four key events, from the Newport International Sports Village and the Official Games hotels to Rodney Parade for the opening ceremony, the Riverfront and the Celtic Manor for the exclusive celebration gala on Sunday. In total, Newport bus are expecting to be moving over 5000 people over the 4-day event.

For those attending who will need to get themselves around the City to the various sporting venues, Newport Bus operates the local bus services to the key venues and spectators can plan their journey via www.newportbus.co.uk/journey-planner. The routes to the main venues are:

  • Newport International Sports Village: Stop Spytty Road Park (SDR) Routes 42, 43 and 44

  • Rodney Parade: Stop Rugby Ground, Routes 42, 43, and 44

  • Active Learning Centre, Bettws: Stop High School, Routes 15 and 16

  • Hollywood Bowl, Spytty Retail Park: Stop Retail Park Routes 42, 43, 20, and 74

“The Westfield Health British Transplant Games aim to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation and the need for families to have the donation conversation. The Games also serves to highlight that through physical activity transplant patients and donors can lead healthy and active lives.

Wales was the first to introduce a soft opt-out system of the organ donor register. However, the decision on organ donation is made by loved ones. That’s why organisers are keen to spread the word that you need to make your wishes – whatever they may be - known to your loved ones.

Event Organiser Andrew Bridge explained: “With less than two weeks to go, Britain’s transplant community is very excited about the Games starting. We have been preparing for this for well over 12 months and Newport is already proving itself yet again as a brilliant host city for large-scale events. We are really pleased to be working with Newport Transport who we are sure will help make the Games a huge success.”

Supporting less traffic congestion and better air quality - #MakeTheSwitch

BUS TICKET OR PARKING TICKET

In support of Newport City Council’s activities in cutting down illegal parking around Newport, we decided to give the civil enforcement officers free travel on Newport Bus. We made the offer to ensure the officers can reach a variety of destinations for their shifts, without adding to the traffic and parking availability.

This is part of our campaign #maketheswitch to public transport. One of the smart solutions to avoid parking fines is for motorists to leave their cars at home and use public transport instead. This campaign goes hand-in-hand with the council’s #ParkRight campaign, which encourages drivers to adhere to the Highway Code and park safely.

Councillor Roger Jeavons, the council’s cabinet member for City Services welcomes the move. He said: “For years residents have complained both to us and Gwent Police about the lack of enforcement on the streets where motorists were blatantly ignoring the rules of the road, causing problems for pedestrians and other drivers, especially in the city centre.

“We know bus drivers also had a lot of problems negotiating roads around the city because of badly parked cars so we welcome the offer by Newport Transport to help in this way.

“We have spent months reinstating or refreshing traffic orders and putting up new signs so people are in no doubt over parking rules.”

Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) was introduced to improve road safety, reduce congestion ensuring more free-flowing traffic and to protect communities from illegal and reckless parking plus enforcing resident parking schemes.

Our Operations director, Morgan Stevens explained: “We’re happy to support the council with the parking enforcement. “As significant road users ourselves, we understand first-hand the difficulties inconsiderate parking creates for other road users. Public transport can be part of the solution to lessen congestion and improve air quality in the city.

“At Newport Bus, we provide over 40 routes in Newport and the surrounding areas, and with 15 new zero-emission electric buses to be fully operational by Easter 2020 and our commitment to continuously review our routes, we can really encourage people to make the switch to the bus as their preferred mode of transport.”

 

 



Prize Draw results Bettws15/16 routes

NEWPORT BUS PRIZE DRAW ROUTE 15/16

Thank you to all our passengers, especially to the travellers on route 15 and 16 who have been showing loyalty and patience while we sorted out a revised bus schedule. The results of the prize draw, which ran on route 15 and 16 between the 10th and 15th of June to say a special thanks are below. The draw was carried out by selecting electronically and at random five bus ticket numbers among all types of the tickets issued on the 15 and 16 services.

It’s been lovely to see that the new timetable has already led to an increase of 5% in the passenger numbers in just over a week. It proves that the new timetable makes it easier for people to travel in and out of Bettws. As a reminder, Newport Bus now operates the 15 and the 16 services every 15 minutes, making it a bus going around Monnow Way every 7 or 8 minutes. The timetables are available at the Travel Centre or ready for download to your devices from our website. Traveline Cymru also operates a live timetable service.
