Following comments on our social media pages, please find below answers to the most common questions received on our fully-electric buses. Please do not hesitate to comment below. We will endeavour to respond to any relevant comments.

  1. Electronic and buses – what about if the bus runs out of power?
  2. The electric bus will not be running out of power. In operations, the bus will return to the depot when the charge reaches approximately 20%. This first addition to our fleet is an ex-demonstrator bus. However, the next fourteen buses will have a higher power charge, which will increase the range of operation.

  1. Electric buses are not really zero emission vehicles as electricity is required to charge the batteries. What is the infrastructure in place at the depot?
  2. Newport Transport has partnered with Zenobe Energy, an independent owner and operator of energy storage. Working with Zenobe ensure that the energy required to charge the buses will be from renewable sources. Newport Transport already utilises 214 solar panels and this is in the process of being expanded. We are working with our partners to ensure that the operations of our electric buses will be as close to zero emission as possible.

  1. It has been reported in the press about children as young as five years old working in mines to get the elements to make the electric batteries.
  2. The elements mined to produce the batteries supplied by Yutong are iron, phosphate and lithium. The reference to child labour is in relation to the mining of cobalt, which is not used in these batteries.
    By working with reputable partners, we ensure that due diligence was given to the accreditation of suppliers.

  1. Will the bus be able to operate a whole day on one charge?
  2. The current bus is expected to cover 187 km (116 miles) on a single charge, making it suitable for most routes around the City of Newport. The next new fourteen buses will benefit from larger batteries increasing the range to 380 km.

  1. What route will the electric bus be operating on?
  2. The current bus is used on most of the routes that currently operate a full-size single-deck vehicle. The mid-term objective is to lower the air pollution in the areas of the city which suffer the most with poor air quality. Therefore, seven of the fourteen buses will be dedicated to the Caerleon Road corridor, which has two areas of poor air quality. The other seven buses will be allocated closer to the time of operation.

  1. The electric bus appears to be a small bus with steps inside, making it dangerous for the elderly and disabled and with very limited seating.
  2. All buses are low floor and compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). The Yutong E12 electric buses ordered by Newport Transport are similar to our current single-deck fleet and have a seating capacity of 39 seats.
    We are reviewing the option of a smaller bus to operate on the routes that can only cope with smaller size vehicles.

  1. Will this first electric bus be permanent in the streets of Newport?
  2. The introduction of electric buses in the Newport Transport fleet is part of our bus replacement strategy. Thanks to the partnership in place with Pelican Engineering and Zenobe Energy, the cost of an E12 is comparable to a diesel bus. In addition, there are substantial financial savings due to lower maintenance requirements, believed to be in the region of 33% compared to a diesel bus.
    At present, the limitation to extend the introduction of the electric buses is the range. Newport Transport required a third of its vehicle to exceed the current range of 340 km of the new vehicles. This will improve overtime as battery technology improves.

  1. Why did you choose the Yutong E12?
  2. We have trialled various models of electric buses over the last 12 to 18 months in order to choose the one that will be best suited to our network. The feedback received on the Yutong demonstrator was very positive. Research into driver and passenger acceptance showed a 94% rating from passengers and 96% from drivers, in contrast with scores in the region of 70-80% on the previous vehicles tested.
    In addition, the manufacturer Yutong is one of the largest electric bus manufacturers in the world, with the experience of thousands of buses with the same battery and drive train in service.

Despite the perk of free bus transport for staff and immediate family as an employee of Newport Transport, the MOT staff has decided to go that bit further for the environment and a healthier lifestyle.

Here what Ben Fife, Vehicle Technician / MOT Tester wrote about it:

In the last few years, cycling into work has become the norm for three of the MOT workshop’s staff. Michael started the trend, relentlessly defying the weather; Michael owns a car, but it’s seen so little, it has now a mythical status! Rico and I both followed, starting to casually ride in on fine days, but in the last couple of years - the cycling bug has really hit, and our cars are only ever brought to work when necessity dictates. This means that most of the time, the majority of our MOT Centre staff ride as opposed to driving.

Thanks to a generous deal, Rico recently bought Michael’s old road bike, meaning all 3 MOT testers now ride light, traffic-beating bikes to get effortlessly to work whilst saving on car emissions and fuel.

Cycling isn’t just a means to an end for our trio. We often ride aside from the commute; cycling for fitness, mental wellbeing and occasionally challenging ourselves with sportive events and longer club rides on the weekends.In three years, I went from riding 3.5 miles to work to riding 104 miles in a day on a Charity ride.

Cycling is the subject of daily conversations, from what’s on the cycling calendar to lycra or the next planned ride. Aside from the health and fitness benefits that the three of us  enjoy, it frees up three parking spaces, is emission-free and helps us remaining positive, healthy and productive staff members.

We’re delighted to announce that Newport Transport has been nominated as a finalist for this year South Wales Business Awards – category Environmental Business of the Year 2019.

The awards, which are run in association with Newport Now Business Improvement District (BID), are a perfect opportunity to showcase the achievements of our business community.

Newport Transport has been chosen as a finalist under the category Environmental Business of the Year after the presentation of our outstanding commitment towards better air quality and cleaner roads around the city of Newport.

Our 2019 environmental campaign started in May 2019, when after months of planning, trials and discussions with government bodies and commercial partners, Newport Transport announced the placement of a firm purchase order for 15 fully electric single-decker buses. This order for E12 Yutong fully electric vehicles will represent over 19% of our fleet of full-size buses by March 2020. Read more here

On 20 June, we took part in the national Clean Air Day event in the grounds of the Royal Gwent Hospital. We hosted the event on board of one of our double-decker buses, where nurses of St Woolos Hospital Chest Clinic ran CO monitoring to identify any high levels of Carbon Monoxide that may (in a non-smoker) be a consequence of air pollution. Newport Bus provided support on route planning and fares in order to help people considering public transport as an appealing alternative mode of transport.

In July, we started our #MakeTheSwitch campaign with a series of posters at the back of our buses. With buses widely recognised as a cost-effective way to reduce road congestion and cut carbon emissions, our choice of messages was very fitting: Parking Ticket or Bus ticket?; Relaxation or Frustration?; Free Up Roads - Free Up Time. Late August, we launched the first fully electric zero-emission bus to operate in Wales. You can read more about this existing story on the BBC Wales website and witness the quietness of the ride. The next 14 buses are currently being manufactured and will be with us early Spring 2020.

We’re not stopping here: We are already looking at smaller electric vehicles to operate the narrower areas of the city and at ways to make it easier for people to use the bus for their regular commute.

New routes and service changes for September 2019

As part of our route improvement plan, we're delighted to announce the introduction of two new routes and amendments to its regular services to start in September 2019.

From the 2nd of September and in time for the opening of the International Convention Centre (ICC Wales) based in the grounds of the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport Bus will be running a new bus route – Route 9. This new route will depart from the bus station (stand 6) to the Coldra Court Hotel and Langstone Business Park, serving the train station, Chepstow Road and the Celtic Manor Resort. ICC Wales is expected to attract an increased number of visitors to Newport and the area. Therefore, it is important that as the main bus operator within the community, we support this fantastic facility by providing public transport for staff and visitors.

The introduction of the route 9 will also benefit the residents of Chepstow Road and more importantly the residents of Treberth estate (Bishpool), with increased services during the day of one every hour instead of every two hours.

The introduction of te new route brings changes to route 73, as it will no longer operate via Treberth Estate which will be serviced by the 9, and will operate directly to the City Centre via Chepstow Road.

Route X74 Newport – Chepstow Service will now serve Glan Llyn estate earlier and later than previously, Monday to Friday, with the first service linking the estate to the city centre departing at 07:30 instead of 11:29 and the last service departing the city centre at 17:25 instead of 14:15. The 74A/74C service remains unchanged.

Routes 42 and 43 – bus station to Spytty Retail Park via Moorland Park or Nash College will both benefit from an increased frequency to every 30 minutes from 8:00 till 18:00 weekdays, giving passengers a combined service every 15 minutes to the retail park or the city centre. Saturdays and Sundays remain unchanged.

We have also brought changes to the routes on the west of Newport. Route 34, currently operating one in the morning and one in the afternoon will be no longer be running from the 2nd of September. Route 35 and 36 remain unchanged, serving Duffryn Way, Tredegar House Drive, Pencarn Way to Celtic Springs. We will be running a prize draw on the 35 and 36 routes and further information will be provided shortly on our social media platforms and bus stops.

Newport Bus has been awarded a contract to operate bus services to both Brynglas and Allt-Yr-Yn. The new services will commence from Monday 10th September and will be numbered 11A/11C. The route 11 will be covering both areas in two opposite loops departing from the bus station (stand 13). Connection on Malpas Road will be available for passengers wishing to split their journey to go to the city centre. An early morning and late afternoon service will be in place to coincide with standard office hours for the people working in the Civic Centre district.

These changes reflect our commitment to help bringing a viable and effective alternative to sustainable transport to the City of Newport.”

Supporting less traffic congestion and better air quality - #MakeTheSwitch

BUS TICKET OR PARKING TICKET

In support of Newport City Council’s activities in cutting down illegal parking around Newport, we decided to give the civil enforcement officers free travel on Newport Bus. We made the offer to ensure the officers can reach a variety of destinations for their shifts, without adding to the traffic and parking availability.

This is part of our campaign #maketheswitch to public transport. One of the smart solutions to avoid parking fines is for motorists to leave their cars at home and use public transport instead. This campaign goes hand-in-hand with the council’s #ParkRight campaign, which encourages drivers to adhere to the Highway Code and park safely.

Councillor Roger Jeavons, the council’s cabinet member for City Services welcomes the move. He said: “For years residents have complained both to us and Gwent Police about the lack of enforcement on the streets where motorists were blatantly ignoring the rules of the road, causing problems for pedestrians and other drivers, especially in the city centre.

“We know bus drivers also had a lot of problems negotiating roads around the city because of badly parked cars so we welcome the offer by Newport Transport to help in this way.

“We have spent months reinstating or refreshing traffic orders and putting up new signs so people are in no doubt over parking rules.”

Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) was introduced to improve road safety, reduce congestion ensuring more free-flowing traffic and to protect communities from illegal and reckless parking plus enforcing resident parking schemes.

Our Operations director, Morgan Stevens explained: “We’re happy to support the council with the parking enforcement. “As significant road users ourselves, we understand first-hand the difficulties inconsiderate parking creates for other road users. Public transport can be part of the solution to lessen congestion and improve air quality in the city.

“At Newport Bus, we provide over 40 routes in Newport and the surrounding areas, and with 15 new zero-emission electric buses to be fully operational by Easter 2020 and our commitment to continuously review our routes, we can really encourage people to make the switch to the bus as their preferred mode of transport.”

 

 



Announcing our own fleet of zero emission fully electric buses

ZERO EMISSION NEWPORT BUS

We, at Newport Transport, are very excited to announce the Newport Bus fleet will soon be operating zero emission electric buses, making these the very first of this type of buses to operate in Wales.

The order is in place for fifteen Yutong E12 electric single-decker buses. The first bus in Newport Transport colours is due to arrive in July 2019. Seven vehicles will arrive in February 2020 and with a further seven due for delivery in April 2020. The fifteen zero-emission electric vehicles supplied by Pelican Engineering/Yutong will represent 15% of the vehicle fleet of Newport Bus.

It was announced on 6 February 2019 that Newport Transport would receive £1,342m of funding from the Ultra-Low Emission Bus (ULEB) Scheme. Newport Transport is working in partnership with Yutong UK, Pelican Engineering, and Zenobe Energy, an independent owner and operator of battery storage. Zenobe also works with the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) to ensure all projects are zero-emission and are compatible with the standards set in the UK government’s recent ULEB scheme.

Councillor Debbie Wilcox, Leader of Newport City Council, said: “This is excellent news especially as Newport Transport will be at the forefront of a revolution in public transport in Wales. Clean, efficient, zero-emission electric buses will significantly improve air quality across the city for the benefit of all those who live and work in Newport.”

The Yutong E12 can seat up to 39 passengers and has an operating range of up to 200 miles (330km) according to the manufacturer. The Yutong E12 will be the manufacturer’s first 12-metre electric bus operating in the UK. The driver and passenger experience is second to none, with separate air-conditioning for the driver and the passengers and no engine vibration or noise. The passenger seating is also enhanced with LED lighting and separate USB charging points.

Councillor Jane Mudd, chair of Newport Transport, said: “This is an exciting and ground-breaking development for public transport in the city. I’m proud that the company is leading the way in partnership with Yutong, Pelican Engineering and Zenobe Energy to guarantee that the buses meet the highest possible environmentally beneficial criteria.”

Higher Frequency on Route 15 and 16 - Bettws

We’ve listened to your feedback, and from the 9th of June 2019, there will be a higher frequency of buses coming your way linking the City Centre and Bettws. With a bus every 7 or 8 minutes throughout the day, it makes it a lot simpler for you to travel back and forth to the city centre, for work or leisure.

Read on to find out about the changes and our thanks to you our loyal customers.

The routes remain the same with the 15 service going anti-clockwise and the 16 service clockwise along Monnow Way. However, we’ll be operating each service every 15 minutes for most of the day, giving you the option to travel with the 15 or 16 service from Monnow Way every 7 or 8 minutes.

The main improvements to the schedule are summarised below:

As the principal bus operator in the city of Newport, we are delighted to announce the release of free personal on-board entertainment on all our main bus routes. Newport Bus vehicles are now equipped with the Bustle Entertainment platform!

Thanks to an update of our on-board Wi-Fi system, Newport Bus can now offer passengers with free access to audio and visual entertainment, such as e-books, audiobooks, podcasts, magazines and games.

The system is simple, with the entertainment platform appearing automatically on the login screen when passengers connect to the on-board Newport-Wifi using their mobile device, phones or laptops.

From the main page, the customer can choose from a selection of e-books, audio books and podcasts as well as browse magazines or play games. They can come back to the portal and their chosen activity later too, by simply entering www.bustlewifi.com while connected to the on-board WiFi hotspot. The content is managed by a third-party company is renewed every 3 months. Passengers have also the option to simply go online by selecting the Go Online button.

And, there’s no need to create an account or download an app to take advantage of this!

As Morgan Stevens, our Director of Delivery explains:” A bus journey to work or school is becoming more than just a journey, but a time to unwind and relax, especially on the extended routes of Cardiff, Cwmbran and Chepstow.”

Newport Bus - Helping to save the planet

Newport Bus are very pleased to be using a large array of solar panels on the roof of our bus depot in Corporation road, Newport - to help offset our carbon footprint, generate electricity for our workshops and offices, and provide energy back to the National Grid which we are paid for, reducing our overheads further.


This image taken in February 2015 by our web development agency Dezines Internet Solutions Limited - clearly shows the size of our solar panel bank, positioned on the south facing section of the workshop roof.

We will be adding scientific data to this blog entry in due course, to evidence the electricity our panels generate.
