WWI Memorial Bus - Nephew Visits Newport Bus

Newport Transport - Friday, July 24, 2015

Newport Bus were delighted to have a visit from the nephew of one of our former colleagues Rifleman Edward James Bailey, who fell during WWI near Ypres.

Mr and Mrs Woodman who left Newport over 40 years ago, visited the city to see one of the buses we have dedicated to Mr Woodman's uncle Edward James Bailey. Newport Bus currently have six buses within the fleet with graphics and names in the memory of the brave souls who fell during WWI, and who had worked for Newport Transport before their deployment.

Below are some of the pictures captured by staff during the visit, which included Mr and Mrs Woodman having a tour of the city in the very same bus dedicated to Mr Woodman's uncle .... registration YN53 GGY, and a visit to our bus depot offices to view the memorial wall plaque. Newport Transport also presented Mr Woodman with a wooden, period double decker bus model.

We would like to say a big thank you to Mr and Mrs Woodman for visiting us, and refreshing our memories of times bygone and reminding us all of the sacrifice made by the people of Newport.

Dear All at NEWPORT TRANSPORT, We came to Newport hoping to photograph 'Uncle Eddy's Bus' and wanted to find the route his bus served, and the best place and time to catch it on route. We had a chance meeting with 'Genny Dudeck (?)in the Museum . He was very kind and started the ball rolling. He telephoned his wife Louisa at your office and we were directed to your ticket office at the back of the Market. We met Dan who passed us on to Tony who made tea for us and phoned Morgan Stevens at the Depot, and eventually Andrew arrived, in 'Eddy's Bus', with driver Jeff. They took us on a tour of Newport, George St. Bridge, the Transporter Bridge, Tredegar House etc., before calling in at the depot to see the memorial to your employees, who had fallen in both world wars. We met Louisa and another lady, who advised us to contact the Corporation for any details they may have of Eddy's employment. Finally, before driving us back to the bus terminal we were presented with a model of your double-decker buses which we shall treasure - a great memento of our visit. Thank you again, we were completely overwhelmed with everyone's kindness! THANK YOU NEWPORT TRANSPORT. with grateful thanks Mike and Mary Woodman PS -We were absolutely delighted to read your Blog report and photos of our visit. Please pass on our thanks to all involved.
