Newport Bus operates a range of value for money bus tickets for an easy and cost-effective way to travel around the city of Newport or to Cardiff, Cwmbran, Chepstow and Monmouth: 

The bus tickets are split into 3 zones - Newport (Zone 1), Cardiff and Cwmbran (Zone 2), Chepstow and Monmouth (Zone 3) – find out more about our zones here

** Youth tickets are issued only on the presentation of a valid Youth passport card or the Welsh Government MyTravelPass.
*** Child singles and day tickets are also called Bamboo paper tickets and do not require showing a Bamboo card. However, Newport Transport reserves the right to ask older looking customers for identification.
**** Guide and assistance dogs travel free of charge. Dogs must not travel on seats. Well-behaved dogs will be allowed to travel at the sole discretion of the bus driver. Dogs or other small animals must not interfere with the safety and wellbeing of any other passengers. The driver can require the removal of any animal from the vehicle if it causes inconvenience. The Dangerous Dogs Act applies.

Paper tickets are issued on board for the following tickets when payment is made by cash, contactless by bank cards and Newport Bus Freedom smartcard and Youth Passport. 

  • Single Tickets
  • R1 service Singel Ticket - see fares on timetable. 
  • City Hopper Tickets – up to 3 stops to Newport Bus Station
  • City Day and City Day Plus Ticket – unlimited travel for the day in Zone 1 or Zone 2 
  • Family Ticket – unlimited day travel in zone 1 and 2 for two adults and up to three children
  • Cardiff Bus Day to Go and Day to go Plus (adult, youth, child and family) - Newport Bus Route 30 plus travel on Cardiff Bus's network
  • MonDay Ticket - unlimited day travel on the entire Newport Bus network (Zone 1, 2, and 3)
  • MonWeek Ticket – unlimited weekly travel on the entire Newport Bus network (Zone 1, 2, and 3)
  • Daily Family and Weekly Network Rider Tickets - unlimited travel on all the Newport Bus network and other South East Wales operators – see our Network Rider page for full details.

A ticket is not issued by the driver when using a pre-paid Passport card or Bamboo card and when using a mobile app ticket. Simply present your Newport Bus smartcard or phone to the ticket machine reader for registration. Other tickets valid on the Newport Bus network:

  • PlusBus Ticket – purchased together with your railway ticket at the railway station – see PlusBus ticket page for more information

  • Route 30 tickets from Cardiff Bus: Day Return ticket, Day-to-Go ticket (between Cardiff City Centre and St Mellons only), Day-to-Go Plus ticket (all route), weekly/4-weekly/annual Day to Go or the relevant Iff App boarding code. The Cardiff Bus App mobile tickets can now be scanned on Newport Bus ticket machines.  
    Newport Bus City Day Plus, Passport Plus are accepted by Cardiff Bus on Route 30 only. The Newport Bus app mobile tickets can also be scanned on Cardiff Bus ticket machines. For information on Cardiff Bus tickets, visit the Cardiff Bus page
