Great value bus fares for 16-21 year olds
Young Persons Fares
From 31 August 2025, the Welsh Government are launching a pilot scheme for 12 months to lower the cost of single and day ticket for 16–21-year-olds (up to 22nd Birthday). This scheme will cap single fares at £1 and multi-operator day tickets at £3. Weekly and 4-weekly tickets will still be available at a 1/3 discount. Other Youth day ticket products will no longer be available for purchase on bus or via app.
mytravelpass
To be eligible for the scheme you must hold a mytravelpass (MTP). The pass must be presented to the driver when purchasing or using a youth ticket. You can apply for a mytravelpass on the Transport for Wales website here - https://mytravelpass.tfw.wales/
Applications are processed by Transport for Wales and the card will be sent to your address.
Buying Single Tickets
Just show your mytravelpass to the driver, ask for a single ticket and pay for your ticket via cash, contactless card or apple/android pay. A ticket will be issued called “Taith Sengl (16-21)”. Single fares are valid for one journey between two points on the same bus at the time of purchase, please keep the ticket for the length of your journey.
If you do not have a valid mytravelpass you will be expected to pay the normal adult fare.
Buying and using Day Tickets – On Bus
Just show you mytravelpass to the driver and request a Youth Day ticket and pay for your ticket via cash, contactless card or apple/android pay. A ticket will be issued called “Tocyn Cymru (16-21)”. Day tickets bought on bus are valid until 23:59:59 on the day of purchase. The paper ticket will be issued with a QR code printed on the ticket. When using your day ticket on a additional journeys please scan the QR code on the reader (if the operator has one) and show the driver your mytravelpass to prove eligibility.
Purchasing and Using Day Tickets – On App
Along with some operators, we will be selling the Youth Day ticket on our mobile app. Buy the the ticket called Tocyn Cymru (16-21). It will show in the app as purchased but you'll need to activate it to use it. Once validated the ticket will be available to use on operators' services until 23:59:59 on the day of validation. Some apps will provide this ticket with a QR code if so, please scan the QR code on the reader (if the operator has one) and show the driver your mytravelpass to prove eligibility.
If your paper ticket or mobile app ticket does not have a QR code please show the driver the ticket along with your mytravelpass when boarding.
Weekly & 4-Weekly tickets
If you're making lots of journeys, it may be cheaper to buy a weekly or 4-weekly ticket. There are no changes to the Terms & Conditions for weekly and 4-weekly tickets. These tickets are still available in their various forms and are used in the same way as previously. Please note these tickets provide a 1/3 discount against the adult equivalent fare and these tickets are not accepted on other operators services. You can a Newport Bus Youth Passport or a mytravelpass as eligibility. Our full range of tickets is available here. If you are travelling on route T7, you can buy tickets on the TrawsCymru app.

Cross Border Services
You can buy the single and day tickets (and use the day ticket) as long as your journey starts or finish in Wales. The scheme is not available for journeys that are undertaken wholly in England regardless of whether you have a mytravelpass.
If you are travelling wholly within England, normal youth fares apply but you’ll need to show ID that proves you are 16-21 (e.g. passport, driving licence, student ID).

To qualify for the discounts listed you must always carry your mytravelpass when using or purchasing Newport Bus tickets. Any misuse of the scheme could result in the card being withdrawn.
