Malpas Road: Road Closure and Diversions

Malpas Road (near the Lyceum Tavern) will be closed from 20:00 on Friday 8 May until 4:40 on Monday 11 May 2026 and again from 20:00 on Friday 15 May to 4:40 on Monday 18 May 2026.

As a result, there will be some disruption to bus services.

Buses on routes 16A, 16C, 18 & 19 will operate their normal timetables but go direct from the bus station via Heidenheim Drive to the top of Malpas Road then resume their normal routes either at Bettws Lane (16A & 16C), Russell Drive (18) or Whittle Drive (19).  Once they have completed their routes around Malpas or Bettws they will operate to the top of Malpas Road and return direct via Heidenheim Drive.

Route 19 will not be able to operate via Westfield Drive or Russell Drive.

Route 13 will not operate as normal.

Route X30 will operate direct from Newport Bus Station to UHW Heath Hospital.

Bus stop at Kimberley Park, Lyceum Tavern, Prospect Street, Aston Crescent, All Saints Church, Bryn Bevan and Brynglas Avenue will not be served by any services.

Bus stops at Barrack Hill Footbridge and Edwin Street will be served by route 13.

Bus stops at Newport Castle will only be served by routes 13 & 14

Bus stops at the Harvester, Graig Park Avenue, Westfield Drive and Russell Drive Footbridge will be served by routes 16A & 16C.

Our app and online timetables have been updated to reflect these changes.

We don’t know the impact the road closure will have on traffic congestion so please allow extra time for your journey.



Route diversions in detail

13 Newport – Brynglas

This service will operate as normal.

16A/C Newport – Bettws

Buses will operate from the bus station via Heidenheim Drive to Woodlands Roundabout then down Malpas Road and turn right into Bettws Lane. After serving Bettws, buses will turn left out of Bettws Lane, up Malpas Road and direct to the bus station via Heidenheim Drive.

Buses will not serve bus stops at Newport Castle, Barrack Hill Footbridge, Edwin Street, Prospect Street, Lyceum Tavern and Kimberley Park.

Buses will stop at Harvester, Graig Park Avenue, Westfield Drive, Llewellyn Grove, Russell Drive Footbridge and Woodlands Drive.

18 Newport – Malpas

Buses will operate from the bus station via Heidenheim Drive to Woodlands Roundabout then down Malpas Road and turn right into Russell Drive. They will then serve their normal route around Malpas. At the end of Montgomery Road, they will turn right onto Malpas Road then direct to the bus station via Heidenheim Drive.

Buses will not serve bus stops at Newport Castle, Barrack Hill Footbridge, Edwin Street, Prospect Street, Lyceum Tavern, Kimberley Park, Blaen-y-pant, Harvester, Graig Park Avenue, Westfield Drive and Russell Drive Footbridge.

19 Newport – Malpas

Buses will operate from the bus station via Heidenheim Drive to Woodlands Roundabout then down Malpas Road and turn right into Whittle Drive. They will then serve Whittle Drive, Almond Drive, Rowan Way, Pilton Vale and Almond Drive as normal. At Almond Drive they will turn right onto Malpas Road direct to the bus station via Heidenheim Drive.

Buses will not serve bus stops at Newport Castle, Barrack Hill Footbridge, Edwin Street, Prospect Street, Lyceum Tavern, Kimberley Park, Harvester, Graig Park Avenue and Westfield Drive.

Unfortunately, we are unable to serve Westfield Drive and Russell Drive.

X30 Newport – Cardiff

Buses will operate via an alternative route between Newport Bus Station and UHW Heath Hospital and vice-versa. Please note that the first stop after leaving the bus station will be UHW Heath Hospital.
