DRT - Demand Responsive Transport

Newport Bus offers a Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) service for the rural areas in the south of Newport, where regular bus services wouldn't be viable. The DRT service uses smaller vehicles than buses with the benefits of traditional bus ticketing.

A DRT service brings greater flexibility to people in rural locations, to manage appointments and work schedules, shop opening hours and connections with local bus services.

The three Newport Bus DRT services operate Monday to Saturday (except bank holidays) between 7:30 and 18:30. The service only runs when a customer has booked transportation for the cost of a standard bus fare (Welsh Concessionary Entitlement Cards are accepted.). They cover the following areas:

  • DRT 31:  Marshfield - St Brides - Castleton -  See map here
  • DRT 62: Bishton - Redwick - Llanwern Village - See map here
  • DRT 63: Goldcliff - Whitson - Nash - See map here

Bookings need to be made by phoning 01633 211 202 or 01633 670 563 up to 4 PM the day before for Tuesday to Saturday bookings, and the previous Friday by 4 PM for Monday bookings. Bookings can be made up to two weeks in advance and as multiple journeys for the regular commutes. Please note that you may be sharing your journey with passengers with similar requests.

At the time of booking, a pick-up point and time are agreed upon with the customer. The pick-up points are normally the closest bus stop to the customer's house. The drop-off points are pre-defined stops in Newport and are as follows:

DRT 31:

Newport Bus Station (Market Square), Asda Duffryn, Harlech Retail Park, Royal Gwent Hospital, Tredegar Park, Brynderwen Surgery (St Mellons), Marshfield Post Office for connection with the Cardiff to Newport 30 service.

DRT 62:

Newport Bus Station (Market Square), Spytty Retail Park, Ringland Circle.

DRT 63:

Newport Bus Station (Market Square), Spytty Retail Park.

The DRT service only picks up pre-booked customers at bus stops in the pre-defined pickup area, outside the DRT area, the service will not pick up any passengers. This allows for faster service into Newport for the customers.

On the return journey (from Newport), only pre-booked customers can travel and only from one of the Newport stops indicated above, then it's a direct route to the passenger's chosen return destination.
