We're Doing Duffryn Differently from 2nd March 2025

2 months ago Wed 5th Feb 2025

From 2 March 2025, your buses between the city centre, Maesglas, Docks Way and Duffryn are changing.

Simpler routes - all buses go the same way all day, everyday, and go around Duffryn the same way too, meaning you’ll always be on the correct side of the road to catch the next bus.
Earlier buses - on Monday to Saturday, the first bus leaves the city centre at 0530 – ideal for a 0600 start at Asda.
Later buses - evening journeys are revised with a new later bus from the city centre at 2220 (Monday to Saturday).
More reliable - buses have more time to complete their journeys, meaning fewer delays along the route.
More buses along Pencarn Way - new route 32 means extra journeys - particularly on Saturdays.
More convenient for Asda - more buses will serve the car park bus stop.

What’s happening?

Routes 35 & 36 will be withdrawn at the end of the day on Saturday 1 March 2025. From Sunday 2 March 2025, we’ll be introducing new routes 32 & 33.

Route 33 will be the main route to and from Duffryn. Buses will run up-to every 30 minutes on Monday to Saturdays, and hourly on Sundays.

It will go from the city centre along Cardiff Road via Maesglas shops then anticlockwise around Duffryn (so that’s Duffryn Drive, Tredegar House Drive, Duffryn Way and Lighthouse Road). It will return to the city centre via Old Cardiff Road and Cardiff Road. In Duffryn it will also call at the bus stop inside Asda.

Route 32 will serve Mendalgief Road, Docks Way then Duffryn Drive, Tredegar House Drive, Pencarn Way, Celtic Springs, Pencarn Way, Asda, Duffryn Way, Lighthouse Road and back along Docks Way and Mendalgief Road.

Why are the changes happening?

The new routes will make the network easier to understand and more convenient to use. All  into the city centre and all journeys on each route will go the same way.

Buses to & from Duffryn will also be co-ordinated with those on route 30 giving a better frequency along Cardiff Road.

Will there be more buses?

Route 33 will operate every 30 minutes throughout most the day so that’s more buses along Cardiff Road and a better spacing of buses around Duffryn. We’ve also added extra early morning and late evening journeys too.

Route 32 will operate as well as route 33 so there will be more buses, particularly at peak times.

Which way will buses go around Duffryn?

All buses on routes 32 & 33 will go anticlockwise around Duffryn (so that’s Duffryn Drive, Tredegar House Drive, Duffryn Way and Lighthouse Road). This means you’ll never be waiting on the wrong side of the road.

What about Celtic Springs and Pencarn Way?

Route 32 will serve Pencarn Way and Celtic Springs throughout the day with extra buses at peak times. Pencarn Way is also served by routes 31A & 31C.

Route 30 offers faster, more direct links from the city centre to Celtic Springs and more journeys were added to route 30 from January 2025.

Will buses be more reliable?

We’ve added more time to peak journeys to make them more reliable. The new routes will minimise delays as buses on the main route 33 will no longer get delayed at Celtic Springs.

How do I get from Duffryn to and from the retail parks along Docks Way?

Our new route 32 is your convenient link between Duffryn and Docks Way retail parks. On Lighthouse Road you can use routes 31A & 31C too.

What about Cardiff Road? Does that get a better service?

Yes. Route 33 operates every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday and most buses to and from the city centre will run between those on route 30. So, on Monday to Friday, there’s a bus about every 15 minutes along Cardiff Road. There aren’t any changes to routes 37, 40 & 41 which also serve Cardiff Road.

What about Docks Way?

There aren’t as many people using the bus along Docks Way or Mendalgief Road, so we’ve adjusted our timetables to reflect this. However, for most of the day there’s still a bus about every hour - as most journeys on route 32 fit between journeys on routes 31A & 31C. And there are additional buses at peak times. On Sundays there are two journeys on route 32 at convenient times for retail workers.

After your feedback, we've added an additional journey (route 32) Monday - Fridays leaving the Newport bus station at 0740 that operates as far as 28 East Retail Park.

Do all buses go from Friars Walk in the city centre?

Yes, and from 2 March, routes 31A & 31C will depart from stand 13 in Friars Walk too, so all buses along Cardiff Road and Duffryn will depart from stands 12, 13 & 15 making it convenient to catch the next available bus.

Are there any changes to routes 30, 31A & 31C?

Route 30 remains the same, although we did make some changes from 5 January 2025 that improved the reliability and introduced some extra early morning journeys.

From 2 March 2025, there will be some minor changes to routes 31A & 31C. This is to ensure that they remain reliable and to help them to fit between journeys on route 32. Buses will no longer serve Ysgol Gwent Is Coed. Routes 31A/C will move to stand 13 in Friars Walk bus station too.
